Julian Sykes came into the Air Mail Service in its first year. He joined on December 2, 1918, and was assigned to be an aviation mechanic. This position was used by the service to help keep and better train air-mail pilots at times when aviator positions were scarce, or to further evaluate pilots before assigning them to routes. There is no record to indicate why Sykes left the service, but he did so on January 31, 1919.
