Pilots who joined the service after the first few years of organization were often required to serve as mechanics as well as relief pilots before being promoted to full pilot. In 1921 Edward S. Maroney began working as a mechanic. During those years, Maroney was improving his flying skills and sought better work. On January 22, 1925, he wrote to Superintendent Egge that "Sometime ago I filed my application for a position as pilot in the Air Mail Service," wondering when he might hear about a promotion. On May 10, 1926, he was finally promoted from Chief Mechanic to Pilot-Mechanic.
