William Henry Carter was a lieutenant in the British Royal Flying Corps during the first World War. In 1919, he was hired to fly the mail for the U.S. Postal Service. He was assigned to the Washington, D.C. – New York City route as a reserve pilot. He spent the summer waiting for an opportunity to fly, but it did not seem to be coming. He resigned in order to return to college at the same time that a flight assignment finally came through. In 1921, Henry decided he wanted to return to the service, but his application was denied.
