Pierre L’Enfant, who was not a Mason, designed the plan for Washington, DC in 1791. The plan includes focal points, open spaces, and an overlaying grid system of streets, intersecting diagonal avenues, and circles. Though THE LOST SYMBOL suggests that L’Enfant embedded his plan with Masonic symbols that become visible by connecting major landmarks, scholars refute the idea.
