On December 14, 1920, Braukman took off in de Havilland airmail airplane #181 from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Rock Springs. He noted that the motor was ok, as was the engine temperature and oil pressure. "Seven miles this side of Rawlins [Wyoming], motor began to smoke and I assumed it caught fire and smoke pouring from Engine Cowling so that the ground was not visible. Shut off gasoline and motor at the same time. The Motor burnt out bearings and threw connections rod through lower crank case. After landing, found inside of cowling scorched. Ship landed on side of hill in rough high sage brush. No damage to ship whatsoever."
