UNSINKABLE!

Not even God himself could sink this ship.
Comment of a White Star Line employee

Typical of the misguided bravado of the age, the public regarded Titanic as a stunning example of man’s ability to master and control the environment through science and technology. The ship was regarded by many as a manmade creation that no power in Heaven or on Earth could sink. Such arrogance ultimately proved fatal for much of the cream of Edwardian and American society onboard Titanic, as well as hundreds of common men, women and children who were simply seeking a better life in a new land.

Built by Harland & Wolff of Belfast, Ireland, at a cost of $7.5 million, the White Star Line’s R.M.S. Titanic was a marvel of her age. At nearly 883 feet in length, Titanic was longer than the tallest structures on Earth at the time.

Titanic was equipped with such amenities as a magnificent grand staircase lit by a 21-light candelabrum, an Arabian-style Turkish bath, 11 different styles of luxury suites, a fully equipped sea post office, and 20 lifeboats -- four more than British regulations required.
