Fate was also cruel to American sea post clerk William Logan Gwinn.  The six-foot-four-inch tall Gwinn, known to his co-workers and family as “Will,” was not supposed to have been aboard Titanic. Upon learning that his wife Florence was deathly ill, Gwinn requested a transfer from his assigned ship Philadelphia to serve aboard Titanic.  He had hoped the trip on Titanic would deliver him home to Brooklyn, New York, and his wife more quickly. Ironically, Florence Gwinn recovered, but her family kept the news of Will’s death from her for many months.

William Logan Gwinn was originally assigned to the Philadelphia, but was transferred to Titanic when he was summoned home. William Logan Gwinn had been a member of the 71st Armory, New York Militia.
