Moon Landing Stamps

Printed using the gravure method, these 29¢ stamps celebrate the first Moon landing in 1969. The landing had previously been commemorated with stamp art by Paul Calle (in 1969) and his son Chris (in 1989). For the 25th anniversary in 1994, father and son worked together.

At first, the Calles were asked to produce one painting for a $9.95 Express Mail stamp. But then the 29¢ stamp was added. Pressed for time, the Postal Service considered simply using part of the first painting, but soon asked the Calles to produce a new one instead.
