The A-B-Cs of Stamp Collecting Workshop with Janet Klug

About 20 participants enjoyed the A-B-Cs of Stamp Collecting Workshop on Sunday, June 7, 2009. The workshop was led by Janet Klug, the immediate past president of the American Philatelic Society and author of the Smithsonian Guide to Stamp Collecting.

After a brief intro to the basics of topical stamp collecting, beginning and returning collectors dug in and started their own collections. "Animal stamps—I have LOTS of them," reported one thrilled kid, holding up a stamp zoo. Other families focused on seashells, transportation, and stamps from around the world. Especially valuable were tips about tongs, mounts, and hinges.

Postal Museum volunteers reported that the workshop revived the love of collecting in adults and got kids hooked on a fun and inexpensive hobby. "They didn't want to leave. Once the stamps were on the table, they wanted to stay all day," said one volunteer.

Gemma displays her topical stamp collections featuring animals. “I have a lot,” she said, showing off some especially cool fish stamps. The A-B-Cs of Stamp Collecting workshop introduced kids and adults alike to the fun of philately. The workshop was led by Janet Klug, author of the Smithsonian Guide to Stamp Collecting, and is generally offered once a year.

This mother-daughter team created topical stamp collections featuring transportation. Mom preferred to use hinges while her daughter liked mounts to attach stamps to the sheet.
