Moving the Mail : On the Road : Horseless Carriage

back

The horseless carriage appealed to innovative postal officials from the beginning. From 1899 to 1906, postmasters in several cities tested a variety of automobiles. These new vehicles were able to move more mailbags between sub-station post offices and rail stations within cities. And they did it at a speed that put horse-drawn wagons to shame.
