Binding the Nation : Pony Express

Pony Express

This artistically designed mural map shows both the Southern Route used by the Overland Mail Service and the Central Route used by the Pony Express

Pony Express Display

The yellow line on this map represents the Southern Route chosen by Postmaster General Aaron Brown for the country's first overland mail service. As Civil War threatened the usefulness of that line, another route was under consideration as the main postal link between east and west.

The red line shows the Central Route used by the Pony Express service when it began in 1860. After war broke out between the states, this route was used by the federal government as the main east to west mail route in the nation.
