Since 1999, John D. Dawson’s paintings for the
Nature of America series have dazzled the public with
their ambitious depictions of American ecosystems. When
Dawson begins preliminary sketches for each new issuance,
he faces a design challenge that many of his colleagues
do not: The entire painting must work as a wide view,
but each stamp must be beautiful when used alone on
