Visual reference material was scarce for some of the
subjects featured on the Legends of the West stamps,
but not for William F. Cody. As the hero of dime novels
and the star of a world-famous Wild West show, “Buffalo
Bill” left behind a spectacular range of photographs
and ephemera that inspired this portrait by Mark Hess.
