AIRMAIL CREATES AN INDUSTRY: NY - Chicago

The Allegany Mountains were a rough stretch for the early airmail pilots to cross. The changing and harsh weather earned this part of the route the nicknames "Hell's Stretch" and "Pilots' Graveyard."
